From a child's very first day in reception, all the way through to Year 6 we support children to make the right 'CHOICES' to enable them to grow into well-rounded, motivated individual.
In Year 1, we have a positive learning attitude and work hard to achieve our personal goals and targets. We all try to make the right 'CHOICES' and give a 100% in everything we do.
Year 1 has a lovely open-plan classroom which has a range of different areas to be accessed throughout the day. These areas allow the children to develop their knowledge and understand independently, applying their reading, writing and maths skills across a range of tasks. The areas help reinforce previous learning.

We have a lovely Julia Donaldson themed reading area, where the children can come and choose a story to read. We have a wide range of genres available! | We have a Maths area that has challenges and activities related to our topic that the children can access. These help the children to embed and colsolidate their learning within their own time. |
We have a creative area which has sensory and creative activities for the children to enagage in throughout the day. These activities will always reinforce our key learning from across a range of curriculum areas. This week, we enjoyed finding the treasure in the sand whilst practising our phonics, and creating our own fabric faces! |
At Rift House we aim for your child to participate in a broad and balanced curriculum. Our timetable shows various opportunities that your child will access daily, including opportunities for mindfulness, Primary Movement and energizers.
Things you can support your child with over this half term:
For our History topic, Year 1 have been looking at how life has changed over time, focsuing on houses, shopping and school life. We enjoyed playing playground games from the 1930s, including hopscotch and duck duck goose! We built 1930s houses out of lego, and compared them to our own houses. We even set up our own bakery and greengrocers to experience what it was like to go shopping in the 1930s!
Our spring term history topic is all about how Toys and Games have changed over time. We loved creating our own peg dolls, like Victorian children used to. We also played with some old toys, including a wooden yoyo, a spinning top, and an old teddy bear.
In Geography, Year 1 have been learning all about our school and the Rift House area! We made our own compassess from natural resources found around our school. This helped us to learn which direction was North, East, South and West. We also went on a fieldtrip around the local area, to spot the different features of the Rift House area. We had lots of fun!
We have had lots of fun learning all about different types of technology. We even went on a hunt around school, and tried to spot as much technology as possible!
Our Computing topic for Spring 1 is Programming. We have been learning all about instructions, and using instructions to control our Bee Bots!
In Year 1 we have been learning to count and dance to a beat in Dance. We have also been practising our throwing and catching in Ball Skills. We also loved practising our gymnastics!
